Teaching Reflection
During this placement I grew a lot as a teacher. I found that I started out too friendly with the students and they started to take advantage of that so it became difficult to have control of the room at some points. I found that I enjoyed working with older students more than I had anticipated. Teaching pottery and sculpture was one of my favorite things about this placement. Teaching this class taught me so much about teaching other people. I found that even if something made sense in my head it might not make sense to the people I was talking to so I have to find multiple ways to communicate an idea or thought. I also found that if a lesson is done right differentiation is not hard to do. For most of my lessons taught at Preston there were no two finished products that were the same. Giving students choice in a lesson really makes differentiation simple.
Throughout education courses I heard how important it was to build strong relationships, and I do not think I realized how important this truly was until I got to Preston Middle School. I struggled opening up to the students at first which made it hard for them to communicate with me and vice versa. Once I was comfortable around the students the class dynamic changed and the classes ran very smoothly. I was able to have discussions with students about their day and what was going on in their life and it made teaching so much easier when I knew that the students and I were comfortable around each other.
If I could do this experience over again I would push myself to open up to the students much faster than I did this time because it made the experience so fun and enjoyable and I got more out of it when I was not afraid of the students and teaching,
